Is it allowed to participate as a team?
Yes, it is. Illustrators can work together with authors.
How many pages does the story need to have?
The story must be told and illustrated in exactly 24 pages, or 12 double pages (spreads). This does not include the cover, the end leaves nor the title page.
Do I need to make a cover?
No, you don’t need to work out a cover.
What’s a maquette?
A maquette is a model of the book, a sketchbook. It contains all the pictures in pencil lines, which will be worked out later on.
Which technique do I use best?
You are free to choose the technique you want.
Do I have to work out everything in colour?
No, only 3 pages need to be completed in colour. You can finish all the pictures in colour, but that’s not necessary. 3 completed pictures are sufficient for the jury.
What size do the pictures need to have?
You choose one of the following usual formats: 250 x 260 mm OR 290 x 210 mm (portrait or landscape) OR 235 x 325 mm
Can I send original illustrations by post?
No. The competing works should be sent digital. The chosen technique however is free. You can scan your original illustrations and send them digital, using the form on the website. If your digital entry is selected for the exhibition, you send original illustrations or coloured prints in due time.
How many times can I participate in the competition?
You can participate as much as you want. There’s no limit.
Do I have to pay an entry fee?
No, there is no entry fee.
Do I need to have experience in order to participate in the competition?
No, the competition is open to everyone, regardless of experience. The work you hand in must be completely original, though, and cannot already be made public.
Is there a longlist and a shortlist?
The jury selects a longlist. The longlisted works are exhibited in the exhibition. Out of the longlist the jury selects a shortlist. One of the shortlisted illustrators will be the winner. This competition selects only one winner. The winning work will be published by Clavis and this illustrator will receive 7.500 euro.
When do I know who has won?
The winner will be announced in Hasselt at the prize-giving ceremony, to which all candidates are invited. The winner will be announced in the media and the complete jury report will be available on this website. The latest report can be found here.
How do I know my work is selected for the exhibition?
The selected illustrators will be informed personally by email.
Who will take part in the exhibition?
The jury selects the best works on the longlist, which will be exhibited in Hasselt and might travel to other places. The number of exhibited illustrations may vary.

Is groepsdeelname toegestaan?
Ja. De illustrator mag samenwerken met een auteur.
Hoeveel pagina’s telt het verhaal?
Het verhaal wordt verteld en geïllustreerd op exact 24 enkele pagina’s, oftewel 12 dubbele pagina’s. Hierin zijn niet inbegrepen de cover, de schutbladen en de titelpagina.
Moet ik een cover maken?
Nee, u hoeft geen cover uit te werken.
Wat is een maquette?
Een maquette is een model van het boek, een schetsboek. Het bevat alle platen van het boek (die later verder uitgewerkt zullen worden) geschetst in potlood.
Met welke techniek werk ik het best?
De gekozen techniek is vrij.
Moet ik alles in kleur uitwerken?
Nee. Enkel 3 platen moeten volledig uitgewerkt worden in kleur. U mag alle platen in kleur uitwerken, maar dat hoeft niet. Aan 3 volledig uitgewerkte platen heeft de jury voldoende.
Hoe groot moeten de tekeningen zijn?
U kiest een van de volgende standaardformaten: 250 mm breed x 260 mm hoog OF 290 x 210 mm (staand of liggend) OF 235 mm breed x 325 mm hoog
Hoe vaak mag ik deelnemen aan de wedstrijd?
U mag zo vaak deelnemen aan de wedstrijd als u wil. Er staat geen limiet op.
Mag ik originele illustraties met de post opsturen?
Nee. Je neemt digitaal deel aan de wedstrijd. De gekozen techniek echter is vrij. Scan je originele illustraties en stuur ze digitaal, gebruik hiervoor het formulier op de website. Indien uw digitale inzending geselecteerd wordt voor de tentoonstelling, stuurt u tijdig originele illustraties of kleurenprints op.
Moet ik ervaring hebben om te kunnen deelnemen aan de wedstrijd?
Nee, de wedstrijd staat open voor iedereen, ongeacht ervaring. Het ingezonden werk moet wel volledig oorspronkelijk zijn en in geen enkele vorm reeds openbaar gemaakt.
Is er een longlist en een shortlist?
De jury stelt een shortlist samen van een 10-tal genomineerden. 1 van hen is de winnaar. In deze wedstrijd is er maar één winnaar. Alle genomineerden worden ook tentoongesteld in de tentoonstelling Kleurboel in Het Stadsmus. De shortlist wordt bekendgemaakt in de pers en op www.keycolours.com.
Hoe verneem ik wie er wint?
De winnaar wordt bekendgemaakt in Hasselt tijdens de prijsuitreiking waar alle genomineerden aanwezig zijn. De winnaar wordt ook bekendgemaakt in de pers en het volledige juryverslag vindt u op deze website.
Hoe weet ik of mijn werk geselecteerd is voor de tentoonstelling Kleurboel?
De illustratoren die geselecteerd worden voor de tentoonstelling worden persoonlijk verwittigd. Onder hen zijn de genomineerden en de uiteindelijke winnaar.
Wie wordt tentoongesteld in Kleurboel?
Uit alle inzendingen kiest de jury de mooiste inzendingen die zullen worden tentoongesteld in het Hasseltse museum Het Stadsmus en eventueel ook elders. Het aantal tentoongestelde werken is variabel.
